Shaping Herzing's Future, One Student at a Time
When Ben Nirschl walks the halls of Herzing University today, he sees the institution through multiple lenses – that of a proud alumnus, a seasoned administrator, and an integral part of the university's enduring legacy. For the past 20 years, Ben has dedicated his career to empowering Herzing students, staff, and faculty, all while advancing his own professional journey within the university he once attended.
From Student to Institutional Leader
Ben's relationship with Herzing began in 2000, when he enrolled at the Madison campus to pursue an Associate's degree in CAD Drafting. Over the next decade, he would go on to earn his Bachelor's in Technology Management and his MBA, cementing his connection to the university.
"While attending Herzing Madison campus for my bachelor's program, Herzing began offering online courses to students in 2003," Ben recalls. "I found the online option more accommodating to the alternative of coming to class Monday through Thursday evenings, 5-9 pm. I enjoyed the courses and had a friend who worked as a recruiter for another area college. I referred him to work at Herzing Online, given my positive experiences, and he became an admissions advisor with the newly formed Online Campus."
This referral would prove pivotal, as it ultimately led Ben to apply for an admissions advisor role at Herzing, kickstarting his professional journey with the institution.
Embracing the Herzing Spirit
Over the past 20 years, Ben has held a variety of roles within Herzing, each one adding to his institutional knowledge and deepening his commitment to the university's mission. Today, he serves as the Associate VP of Business Intelligence, overseeing the critical reporting and analytics that support Herzing's operations and strategic priorities.
"Being a student participating in our accreditation process and later on going through that process in the role of an administrator of the university has offered me several perspectives and experiences that have been beneficial throughout the years," Ben shares.
Throughout his tenure, Ben has witnessed Herzing's remarkable growth, from outgrowing its original building three times in his first eight years to expanding its reach and impact across the country. But it's the university's tight-knit community and culture that truly sets it apart in Ben's eyes.
"The people and the culture – Herzing is in the business of helping people improve themselves through academics, but it goes much beyond the classroom," he explains. "It's the smiles and greetings you get when you walk in the door. The support you receive when you are not feeling your best to help you find and get to the light. It's the inspiration you get when working with classmates and colleagues who are all dealing with their own personal challenges and you realize your problems are not so unique or insurmountable."
Paying It Forward
As an alumnus and long-time employee, Ben takes great pride in Herzing's 60-year legacy of empowering students and transforming lives. From celebrating graduations to participating in staff gatherings, he relishes the opportunity to give back and foster the same sense of community that has been central to his own Herzing experience.
"Believe in yourself and know that Herzing believes in you and will be there with you throughout the journey," Ben advises current and future students. "Embrace opportunities, build connections, never cease to learn new things and give back."
Ben's journey is a testament to Herzing's enduring commitment to its students, staff, and alumni – a commitment that has defined the university for six decades and continues to shape its bright future.
