A Passion for Healing and Education
Alejandro's journey in healthcare began with a deep-rooted desire to help others and make a meaningful impact, especially within communities facing challenges in accessing equitable care. This passion led him to pursue a nursing degree at Herzing University, a decision that would shape his future in profound ways.
Currently serving as both a Nurse Practitioner and a Nursing Professor, Alejandro's career is a testament to his commitment to both patient care and education.
The Herzing Experience
Alejandro chose Herzing University for its accelerated program, which allowed him to obtain his degree faster than traditional programs. His academic journey was marked by excellence, earning him spots on both the Dean's List and President's List.
But Alejandro's time at Herzing wasn't just about personal achievement. He actively participated in community health projects, including a notable collaboration at the Hispanic Health Resource Center in Waukesha. There, he worked alongside his preceptor to educate Latino patients about cholesterol and hypertension, emphasizing culturally appropriate dietary practices for heart health.
Making an Impact Beyond Graduation
After graduation, Alejandro's first role was as a nurse on a cardio-thoracic/surgical/transplant unit. This experience laid the foundation for his impressive career trajectory.
Alejandro's contributions to healthcare and his community have not gone unnoticed. He was named a Distinguished Alumni of Herzing University for 2024, recognized as one of Wisconsin's Top 40 Latino Leaders Under 40 in 2023, and honored as a Top 40 Under 40 Emerging Leader by the National Association of Hispanic Nurses in 2024.
His commitment to excellence in patient care is evident through multiple awards, including the Living Our Daily Values (LOVE) Award and six Daisy Awards from Advocate Health St. Luke's Medical Center.
Giving Back to the Community
Alejandro's impact extends far beyond his professional roles. As a board member of the Greater Milwaukee National Association of Hispanic Nurses (GMNAHN), he actively supports Latine/o/a nurses and advocates for health equity within Spanish-speaking communities. His efforts include mentoring nursing students and collaborating on wellness projects for underserved populations.
The Herzing Difference
Reflecting on his time at Herzing, Alejandro emphasizes the university's unique sense of community and support. He fondly remembers professors like Havilah Normington, Darcy Rahberger, and Paula Winters, who provided invaluable mentorship and inspiration. Today, Alejandro works alongside Havilah, teaching the next generation of nurses and coming full circle in his journey.
Advice for Future Students
To current and future Herzing students, Alejandro offers this advice: "Get involved in professional organizations and build your network early. Don't be afraid to ask questions; it's how you learn and grow. Lean on your peers, embrace every challenge as an opportunity for growth, and be proud of where you are. You're capable of more than you know, and you're building a future that will impact countless lives."
