Building Futures Together: Children's Wisconsin and Herzing University Partnership transforms health care careers
In a remarkable partnership that began in 2019, Children's Wisconsin and Herzing University joined forces to create innovative pathways for health care professionals while strengthening community healthcare services. “Herzing’s online programs and flexible approach were key factors in establishing this partnership,” said Julie Okoro, Workforce Development manager.
Innovating healthcare education
One of the partnership's achievements is a specially designed Medical Assistant Program for current Children's team members – the MA Grow Your Own Program. This innovative program allows employees to pursue medical assistant certification while maintaining their current positions, creating a seamless pathway for career advancement. The impact of this initiative extends beyond professional development – it transforms lives.
Real stories, real impact
During a meeting with the interim secretary of workforce development for the state of Wisconsin, three Children’s team members shared their powerful stories of becoming medical assistants. "Their achievements rippled through their lives – from becoming role models for their children to purchasing their first homes. They also gained the ability to make a more significant impact on the children and families they serve, advocating for them in their times of need," said Okoro.
The partnership's success extends beyond the MA program. Through Herzing's connection, Children's has recruited several nursing assistants from the Boys and Girls Club of Greater Milwaukee's Nursing Assistant program, further strengthening their workforce while creating opportunities for community members.
Creative solutions for student success
What sets this partnership apart is Herzing's commitment to meeting both institutional and individual needs. When challenges arise, Herzing responds with creative solutions – even providing laptops to students to ensure their success. The university's faculty actively listens to organizational needs and adjusts coursework accordingly, demonstrating their dedication to producing workplace-ready graduates.
Looking to the future
This collaboration continues to evolve with both organizations always exploring new ways to partner.
"Herzing's team truly understands our community’s needs," says Okoro. "They're always seeking solutions and partnership opportunities to address health care workforce challenges."
As both institutions look to the future, this partnership stands as a testament to the power of collaborative education in health care.
