A Fresh Start at Herzing

When José Campuzano first walked into Herzing University's New Orleans campus, he had already attempted college twice before. Within three hours of addressing his financial aid concerns, he walked out with a class schedule and student ID – marking the beginning of an extraordinary academic journey that would lead to three degrees in three years.

Breaking Through Educational Barriers

"I didn't think I would ever finish a degree program," Campuzano reflects. "Herzing made it possible for me to finish three degrees in three years."

Campuzano's achievements include an Associate degree in Criminal Justice (2016), a Bachelor's in Homeland Security (2017), and an MBA in Project Management (2018). His academic excellence earned him Dean's List honors and Cum Laude distinction.

A Supportive Learning Environment

The support Campuzano received at Herzing proved transformative.

"Their desire to help me restart a lifelong goal that I thought would never happen was humbling and a reflection of Herzing's mission statement," he shares. From caring teachers to dedicated counseling staff who encouraged him to pursue advanced degrees, the university community played a crucial role in his success.

His connection to Herzing grew even stronger when he was selected to represent the student body in a university commercial in 2017. As Vice President of the Campus President's Council, he became deeply involved in campus life, coordinating special events and graduation ceremonies.

Excellence in Law Enforcement

His professional accomplishments match his academic success. As a retired Chief of Police and current U.S. Department of Defense Police officer, Campuzano has completed prestigious law enforcement training programs, including the FBI Law Enforcement Executive Development Association Leadership Institute and the Federal Law Enforcement Training Academy.

Giving Back to the Herzing Community

Beyond his professional role, Campuzano maintains strong ties with Herzing as President of the Alumni Association. His connection to the university reached a new height when he served as the 2022 Commencement Speaker, sharing his inspiring story with over 100 graduates.

"It was an honor to tell my story to the graduating class," he says. "I look forward to continuing to create more memories with Herzing University."

Continuing the Journey

Currently pursuing his Ph.D. at another institution, Campuzano still misses Herzing's unique academic platform.

"Herzing makes it simple and manageable," he says. "The hardest part is to get started! Once you start and get into a rhythm, you will easily dance yourself to the finish line."

For those considering Herzing, Campuzano's advice is clear: "Set a goal and rise to the occasion. Your time invested in Herzing will always pay itself back and then some."
