For over two decades, Senior Financial Aid Advisor Kentray Sims has been a cornerstone of student support at Herzing University. With a passion for helping students overcome financial barriers to education, Kentray has dedicated his career to ensuring that academic dreams remain accessible to all.

Guiding Students Through Financial Challenges

As a Senior Financial Aid Advisor, Kentray describes his role as "centered around guiding and supporting students and their families through the financial aid process, ensuring they have access to the resources necessary to pursue their education." His daily work involves educating students about various financial aid options—grants, loans, scholarships and work-study opportunities—while helping them determine the best financial paths based on their unique circumstances.

This dedication to student financial well-being stems from personal experience. "From personal experience, I saw firsthand how financial challenges can impact access to higher education, and I felt a calling to be a part of the solution," Kentray explains. During his college years, he encountered financial aid challenges that inspired him to work in his school's financial aid office as a federal work-study student. That early experience sparked a passion that would shape his entire career.

A Career Spanning 25 Years

Since joining Herzing University on August 16, 1999, Kentray has witnessed the institution's evolution while maintaining his focus on student support. After earning his degree in finance, he deliberately sought opportunities in financial aid, drawn by "the chance to make a tangible difference in students' lives."

While Kentray didn't attend Herzing himself, the institution has become part of his family's educational journey—his wife received her Master of Science in Nursing from Herzing University.

Going Above and Beyond for Students

Throughout his 25-year tenure, Kentray has accumulated countless memorable experiences, but one story particularly highlights Herzing's student-centered approach. He recalls working with a student who had initially thrived in on-ground courses but began struggling when some classes transitioned to an online format.

"Despite previously maintaining above a 3.0 GPA, the student began failing the online classes, which led his parent to reach out to me," Kentray shares. The concerned parent emphasized how important in-person learning was for his son's specific learning style and expressed worry about their financial investment.

What happened next exemplifies Herzing's commitment to student success. "After discussing the matter with the administration, Herzing agreed to provide the student with the necessary assistance to help him complete his degree, at no additional cost to the family," Kentray explains. With this support, the student successfully graduated, and the family was extremely pleased with the outcome.

For Kentray, this situation perfectly demonstrates "Herzing acting in the best interest of the student," and represents the meaningful moments that make his work fulfilling.

A Culture of Integrity

When asked what makes Herzing University special, Kentray points to the institution's "unwavering commitment to 'doing the right thing the right way.'" This philosophy, he explains, influences every aspect of university operations, "from the way we engage with students to how we navigate challenges."

"The focus on integrity, transparency, and always prioritizing the best interests of students sets the institution apart," he emphasizes. This approach creates not only an ethical environment but also helps students "feel valued and cared for as individuals," which Kentray considers a defining feature of Herzing University.

Collaborative Support for Student Success

Kentray's approach to student engagement is comprehensive and collaborative. "I prioritize one-on-one interactions, offering guidance on financial aid processes, answering questions, and helping them navigate any challenges they may face during their academic journey," he shares.

Beyond direct student support, he collaborates with colleagues across departments—admissions advisors, student services advisors, program chairs, and faculty—to provide integrated assistance. "This teamwork allows us to address any issues students may

encounter and work together to find solutions that enhance their educational experience," Kentray explains. This holistic approach helps maintain the supportive, student-centered atmosphere that defines Herzing.

Wisdom for Students

Drawing from his extensive experience supporting students, Kentray offers valuable advice for current and prospective Herzing University students: "Take full advantage of the resources and support available to you."

He acknowledges that college presents both exciting opportunities and significant challenges, encouraging students to be proactive in seeking help when needed. "Don't hesitate to reach out to your professors, academic and student services advisors, or the financial aid office; these resources are here to ensure you succeed," he advises.

Kentray's parting wisdom emphasizes the transformative nature of education: "Remember, your educational journey is not just about the degree, but about the experiences and growth that shape you as a person. Embrace each challenge and opportunity with an open mind and a positive attitude."

As Kentray Sims continues his impactful work at Herzing University, his quarter-century of dedication stands as a testament to the institution's commitment to supporting students through every step of their educational journey.
