Finding His Purpose

When Markeith Jackson-Jones enrolled in the Legal Studies program, he was driven by a profound purpose. "At the time there were racial and socioeconomic disparities I observed within the legal system," he explains. "I made a decision to pursue law in an aim to become a criminal defense attorney."

This clear vision led Markeith to begin his journey as a paralegal with formal education. After thorough research, he discovered what he calls "the most reputable" program with all the proper accreditations he sought.

Excellence in Education

The rigorous curriculum proved challenging yet rewarding. "The Herzing curriculum was more challenging than any other higher education institution I have ever attended," Markeith notes. "Even Juris Doctorate classes and my legal studies classes were way more intense."

This academic rigor prepared him exceptionally well. For his contracts course final exam, students had to draft a legally binding contract from memory. "I was able to do it and received an A on that final exam and an A in the course because the curriculum made sure I understood it," he recalls proudly.

Professional Growth While Learning

Markeith's professional journey began while still a student. "I actually landed this job while at Herzing," he shares about his first position at a personal injury firm. "My classes actually helped me with my paralegal field work."

The foundation built during his studies proved instrumental as he transitioned from employed paralegal to entrepreneur. "Post graduation I began my own independent paralegal services," he explains, which eventually led to his current role as CEO of a paralegal and accounting services firm.

Mentorship That Made a Difference

When reflecting on meaningful connections, Markeith expresses particular gratitude for two professors. "I want to give a special acknowledgement to Prof. Jane Paglino and Prof. Mary Orcutt. These two professors were very nice to me when I took their classes and they both gave me recommendations to get into law school. They both have a special place in my heart."

These recommendations proved valuable, as Markeith was later accepted into a California State Bar accredited University Juris Doctor program.

Community Leadership

Beyond his professional accomplishments, Markeith demonstrates extraordinary commitment to community engagement. He serves as the current Grand Archon (National President) of Omega Sigma Delta Auxiliary Fraternity, Inc., an all-gender fraternity for marching band auxiliary dancers.

His involvement extends to multiple organizations at Wayne State University, where he assists with student outreach, engagement and cross-departmental collaboration. "Most of what I do is serve as an unofficial advisor to other organizations and departments and give analytics, advice, engagement tips," he explains.

Personal Transformation

The educational journey provided more than professional skills for Markeith. "I learned to advocate for myself, I learned to be diligent, be attentive to myself and my studies," he reflects. "I also learned to give my energy to the things that mean the most to me."

Perhaps most significantly, the program restored his academic enthusiasm during a challenging period. "I was in a really tough emotional spot before I started the Legal Studies program, but doing the program really lit my spark in academia again."

Advice for Future Students

For those considering or currently pursuing their education, Markeith offers honest encouragement: "Pursuing a degree is very rewarding! I would say prepare for work, the faculty and staff are all helpful and supportive."

He emphasizes the importance of diligence, advising students to be "prepared to work diligently and seriously on whatever program they pursue or are pursuing."

The Power of Community

What makes the educational experience special, according to Markeith, is the sense of belonging. "It's different because of the community you receive," he explains. Despite attending online, he "still was able to build rapport with professors and classmates."

This community spirit culminated at graduation: "Commencement was full of love and support from my fellow graduates, faculty and staff. It was a sight to behold."
