Finding the Right Fit
Shayla Morgan's journey to Herzing began with a search for responsive support. "The advisors were very responsive and communicated with me well," she explains about her decision to choose Herzing. As a veteran of the United States Air Force, Shayla was particularly impressed by the university's commitment to military service members.
"I noticed the support Herzing University offers to its Veterans. The process in applying, enrolling and starting was incredibly easy," she shares. This seamless transition from military service to academic life set a positive foundation for her educational journey.
Nursing: A Calling for Deeper Patient Connection
Though Shayla once dreamed of becoming a computer technician as a child, her professional path led her to nursing—and a desire to expand her impact. She selected the Bachelor of Science in Nursing program with clear purpose: "I wanted to further my nursing career. I want to be able to be more involved with my patients past discharge."
This mission-driven approach guides her studies and fuels her aspiration to work in a Neuro ICU at a teaching hospital after graduation.
Finding Balance and Building Momentum
As a mother and wife, Shayla has developed a strategic approach to balancing academic demands with family life.
"I choose to complete my course work on campus and not bring school work home," she explains. "I have a big family so I like to dedicate my evenings to my children and husband."
This intentional separation has allowed her to progress steadily through her program, with each semester completion bringing special joy. "My most joyous moments are each semester when I progress to the next stage," she reflects.
Drawing Inspiration from Mentors
Shayla credits much of her motivation to an influential faculty member. "I credit my drive to do more to Dr. Mary Little-Green. She met adversity at every point in her life. It did not stop her," Shayla shares.
This relationship illustrates the power of mentorship at Herzing, where faculty members don't just teach content—they inspire personal and professional growth through their own examples of perseverance.
Advice for Future Students
When asked what guidance she would offer incoming students, Shayla's response reveals the mindset that has propelled her success:
"Tell yourself you cannot fail. There is no other option. Plan, get organized, and if applicable, pray."
This combination of unwavering determination, practical preparation and personal faith forms a powerful framework for achievement.
The Herzing Difference
What makes Herzing stand out in Shayla's experience? "It is geared to working adults. It is cozy but has a great learning environment," she observes.
This balance between accessibility for busy professionals and academic excellence creates an ideal setting for students juggling multiple responsibilities while pursuing ambitious goals.
As Herzing University celebrates six decades of transforming lives through education, stories like Shayla's highlight the institution's ongoing commitment to supporting diverse learners on their paths to professional fulfillment.
