A Journey of Growth and Dedication: Yahia Fawzi's 25 Years at Herzing University
When Yahia Fawzi first arrived in the United States in 1999, he couldn't have anticipated that his first job would become a 25-year career journey filled with growth, recognition and meaningful impact. Now serving as Network & Systems Administrator III, Yahia's story reflects both personal dedication and Herzing University's commitment to fostering long-term professional relationships.
From Teaching to Technology Leadership
Yahia's Herzing journey began with an adjunct teaching position in 1999, where he taught Microsoft MCSE certification courses at what was then known as Herzing College. "It was my first and current employment since coming to the United States," he explains, highlighting how significant this relationship has been in his life and career.
His expertise and dedication were quickly recognized, leading to a full-time position as an IT instructor in 2000. Over the years, his role evolved to encompass both teaching and technology management. "Up until 2013, I was still teaching computer courses. Also, since 2005, I was also the campus network admin helping students and campus with their technology needs," Yahia shares.
This dual focus on education and technology infrastructure showcases his versatility and commitment to supporting the institution through multiple channels.
Recognition and Memorable Moments
Among his many memories at Herzing, one stands out with particular clarity. "I remember it like it was yesterday in 2003 when Mr. Henry Herzing called me at the campus, congratulating me in person and inviting me to Sarasota to the annual meeting as the recipient of the Herzing-wide instructor of the year for 2002," Yahia recalls. "What a surprise and honor it was."
This recognition not only celebrated his teaching excellence but also reinforced the personal connections that make Herzing unique. The fact that the university's founder personally reached out speaks to the organization's values and culture.
Celebrating Community and Connection
When asked about traditions or events he looks forward to, Yahia mentions the end-of-semester all-call meetings that bring the Herzing community together. These gatherings provide opportunities to "learn about campus events, celebrate anniversaries, and learn about projects," creating a sense of shared purpose and recognition.
He also values the annual meetings that mark significant milestones, particularly recalling his experience attending as instructor of the year. "Great to attend and a lot of fun," he notes, emphasizing how these events strengthen the bonds among colleagues.
Evolution and Growth
Yahia's career at Herzing has mirrored the institution's own evolution and expansion. While he took "a few masters level courses as a Herzing employee, back in 2008," his primary relationship with the university has been as a dedicated staff member whose role has grown in scope and responsibility.
In 2016, his position shifted from being based at the Orlando campus to joining the IT infrastructure team at the system level, reflecting the growing complexity and importance of technology in supporting the university's mission.
Community Engagement
During his years at the Orlando campus, Yahia actively participated in local community events. One particularly meaningful experience involved sponsoring the Russell Home, an organization dedicated to caring for special needs children.
"We visited them and I was really touched by their stories and how great of a place it was taking care of those children!" he shares, demonstrating how Herzing's commitment to community extends beyond education to making a broader social impact.
The Herzing Difference
For Yahia, what makes Herzing special is clear: "The relationships with other team members, amazing people work here, great vision for the future!" This emphasis on people and relationships reflects the university's ability to create not just an educational institution but a community where professionals can build meaningful long-term careers.
Advice for Students
Drawing from his extensive experience both in the classroom and behind the scenes, Yahia offers straightforward advice to current and prospective students: "Get your degree or come back for more if you already graduated. Herzing University changes lives and is a great place to be!"
This enthusiastic endorsement, coming from someone who has witnessed the institution's impact for 25 years, carries particular weight and speaks to his belief in Herzing's educational mission.
As Yahia Fawzi continues his work ensuring that Herzing's technological infrastructure supports its educational goals, his quarter-century of service stands as a testament to the lasting relationships and meaningful careers that the university fosters among its staff.
