Henry and Suzanne Herzing: Pioneers, Educators, Visionaries

The Heart and Soul of Herzing University for 60 Years and Counting

As we celebrate Herzing University's 60th anniversary, we honor the visionary couple who started it all: Henry and Suzanne Herzing. Their journey from ambitious young professionals to pioneering educators has shaped the lives of countless students and the landscape of career-focused education.

Henry's path began with his service in the U.S. Navy. This experience not only instilled in him a sense of discipline and commitment, but also provided him with the opportunity to attend Northwestern University, earning a degree in electrical engineering that laid the foundation for his future in technology and education. After his naval service, Henry's career took him to Litton Industries, where he discovered his passion for working with advanced technology and teaching others how to harness its power.

Suzanne's role in the founding and growth of Herzing University cannot be overstated. With a keen eye for detail and a talent for organization, she managed the administrative functions that kept the young school running smoothly. She pursued a master's degree in library science while helping build the foundation of what would become Herzing University.

In 1965, Henry and Suzanne took a leap of faith that would change their lives — and the lives of many others. Spotting an opportunity in the emerging field of computer education, they acquired their first school, Electronic Computer Programming Institute (ECPI), in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Starting with just 12 students, they poured their energy into creating a learning environment that would prepare students for the rapidly evolving world of technology.

By 1968, their success and determination allowed them to acquire struggling schools in other cities, expanding their reach and impact. In 1969, they made the bold decision to forge their own path, rebranding as Herzing School and developing their own curriculum to better serve their students' needs.

Over the decades, Henry and Suzanne's initial vision has blossomed into a comprehensive university offering programs in technology, business, healthcare, public safety and design. Their commitment to career-focused education has helped thousands of students transform their lives and achieve their professional goals. As we look back on 60 years of growth and success, their legacy continues to guide Herzing University as we prepare students for the careers of today and tomorrow.
